Big thank you to the 27 volunteers that came out for the beach cleanup on Plum Island with Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation. We picked up over 170 pounds of litter from our local beach, including nearly 200 bottles & cans, 86 straws, 1 tire, 33 water treatment disks, 13 syringes, 36 grocery bags, and loads of waste plastic. We'll probably do another beach cleanup after the summer, so watch for that!
We may not have made the mess but we can still clean it up!
Volunteers Needed! Join us Sunday, April 29, 11AM at Plum Island Point and take part in a spring cleanup of our local beach.
Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation will be with us to give a brief presentation on their research efforts and ways we can all help protect the environment. Blue Ocean volunteers have removed over 170,000 pounds of litter from our local beaches since 2001.
We'll spend an hour or two collecting trash off the beach and recording our findings to contribute to their long-term study on marine pollution. We’ll weigh all of our trash at the end to see how much our group collected. We'll also get a group photo, so please wear something BLUE!
Beach cleanups are a great way to get involved in protecting the marine environment, and a great way to get exercise so don't forget to wear your FitBit! Kids love to help, too, so feel free to bring your kids or your on-leash dog as long as they are not a hindrance.
We will start at the mouth by the jetties, where the ocean meets the Merrimack River and continue around the Point just past the Coast Guard station to the Captain's Lady pier.
Afterwards a few of us will probably head to Mad Martha's to catch a late brunch - whoever wants to can tag along!
WHAT TO BRING:
*Water in a reusable bottle (let's not make more trash!)
*Work gloves if you have them
(otherwise non-latex gloves will be provided)
*Small bag in case you find interesting shells or sea glass!
*When you get to Plum Island, go straight through the Center, take a left on Northern Blvd, continue past the lighthouse and take a right into the parking lot at the Point.
*There is plenty of parking and it's usually free this time of year.
*Meet at the boardwalk entrance to the beach near the playground.
*If you arrive late, just start there and you can probably catch up to us pretty easily on the beach. We'll be wearing blue.
